Race for the Cure

 

Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure, in its 27th anniversary, is the largest series of 5K runs/fitness walks in the world, with well over one million participants since 2005. The Komen Race for the Cure Series raises significant funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship, and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease, according to the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure website.

 

MANA's PR Committee was honored to be a Crystal Sponsor of the event yet again, which took place Saturday, May 22, 2010. While Diann Sweet Gorguze (PR Committee Co-Chair), Angela Butler (SRNA from WSU) and Kristina Buszta (SRNA also from WSU) - pictured left to right in picture #1 below - passed out gadgets and encouraged particpants, Jennifer Dickie (MANA Association Manager) and her daughter, Samantha, raised money and walked in honor of Cousin Susie who is a breast cancer survivor.

Downtown Detroit was a sea of pink this morning as 30,000 men, women and children braved threatening rains to walk and run to eradicate breast cancer.


“We’re warriors and a little bit of rain isn’t going to stop us from fighting this disease,” said Maureen Keenan Meldrum, chairman of the 19th Annual Susan G. Komen Detroit Race for the Cure that kicked off at 9 a.m. today from Comerica Park in downtown Detroit.


Participants either walked or ran a 5 K or walked one mile to raise money for research, awareness and treatment of breast cancer.


Teams and individuals wore an assortment of pink hats, caps and scarfs and wore a variety t-shirts with catchy phrases.


The number of teams registered climbed from 500 last year to 600 this year, organizers said. They carried signs and wore banners with names like Breast Friends Forever, Amy’s Army, Bonnie’s Angels, Nik’s Nips and Counselors for the Cure. Read on...
