Nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia care to patients in the United States for nearly 150 years (see “CRNA’s at a Glance.”)

  • CRNAs are the primary providers of anesthesia care in rural America. In Michigan, CRNAs are the sole providers in the majority of rural hospitals.

  • Nurse anesthetists have been the main providers of anesthesia care to U.S. military personnel on the front lines since WWI, including current conflicts in the Middle East. Some military facilities do not even have anesthesiologists. Nurse anesthetists, working alone, tend to be the military’s sole anesthesia provider in combat situations
